Rail Budget 2012 Trivedi proposes fare hike of 2 to 30 paise per km

Presenting the Railway Budget 2012 , Railway Minister Dinesh Trivedi on Wednesday proposed to increase passenger fares ranging from 2 paise per km to 30 paise per km.

While seeking funds for modernisation of the cash-strapped Indian Railways, Trivedi proposed a hike of 2 paise per km for the general class fares. The hike means an increase of Rs.20 in fare for a 1,000 km journey.

Similarly, fares of sleeper class, third AC, second AC and first AC were increased by 5 paise, 10 paise, 15 paise and 30 paise per km respectively. Effectively, the increase in fares for a 1,000 km journey in these classes would come to Rs.50, Rs.100, Rs.150 and Rs.300 respectively.

 The passenger fares hikes have been proposed after 10 years. The minister also proposed to increase platform ticket price from Rs.3 to Rs.5. He also announced a concession of 50 per cent in AC fares to the passengers suffering from anaemia.

Earlier in his speech, Trivedi said safety would be the prime focus of his ministry during the 12th Five Year Plan, along with network expansion and modernisation.

"My focus will be safe safety, safety, safety ," Trivedi told the Lok Sabha, presenting the Rail Budget for 2012-13. This was the decision he took as soon as he assumed charge of his ministry last year against the backdrop of an accident in Uttar Pradesh, the minister said.
